THE DATING DANCE | THE MIXTAPE INCIDENT | Strouse House Chronicles: PART 6 C

BRAD - After being in Ohio for a few weeks on my internship, I compiled a mixtape AKA CD (yes kids, there was music before ipods) and included a voice memo about how much I missed and liked Allie. We talked on the phone constantly until one day I received a text “I think you may like me more than I like you”. I was devastated!

My grandma remembers the day so well and told this story to Allie after we were married, “I was cleaning up in Bradley’s room and to my surprise I found all of the framed pictures he had brought of you two together face down on the dresser. I asked him about this new development and like all men his age, he dodged the question by telling me ‘it’s a long story”. I thought this was the end!”

ALLIE - In my defense, I was scared. This man that was my best friend has now 100% expressed how he felt for me and it was vulnerable. Almost as vulnerable as it is to relive this moment and write this blog. :-D Deep down, I felt the exact same way, but I was so worried that because he was 10 hours away with no way for us to ever get back in the same city, I thought what had developed at Auburn was going to end so I was trying to protect my heart.

BRAD: We gave each other some space and after graduation I ended up getting a job in Montgomery, AL and Allie moved back to Richmond. We were still in our dating dance. I guess we should define the dating dance really quick. As you can see, the idea of dating scared us (OK - just Allie) so we danced around it for almost a full year. We would be like “Oh yea, we like each other” and then turn to “but let’s stay friends for now.” So in the middle of this dance, I decided I wanted to dance with someone else since we were not exclusively dancing with each other. Once she found she found out I’d been spending a bit of time with a new lady friend, it wasn’t long before it was implied that we were exclusively dating and not long after that it was official.
